Tunis is known by its famous Roman ruins of Carthage and benefits of a long history. The Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Arabs, Ottomans and French have all stamped their imprint on Tunis. The city has the finest collection of mosaics in the world.
Under the Almohads and the Hafsids, from the 12th to the 16th century, Tunis was considered one of the greatest and wealthiest cities in the Islamic world.
Tunis became the capital of Tunisia under the Hafsid dynasty and was a leading centre of trade with Europe.
