Atyrau, capital of Atyrau province and port city in western Kazakhstan, is located at the mouth of the Ural River on the north coast of the Caspian Sea. Despite the close proximity to the sea, Atyrau experiences a continental climate with extremely dry, hot summers and freezing winters.
Atyrau has served as a regional fish processing center supplying predominantly sturgeon caviar to the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Atyrau, coined by foreign specialists as the pearl of the land of oil, is a major oil-producing and refining center from which ICEC directs its Caspian region sulphur activities. |
