| The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is located in the centre of the Eurasian landmass, and is about 1.60 million square kilometers in area, accounting for approximately one sixth of the total territory of China. Xinjiang is very rich in natural resources and so figures largely in China's future. Xinjiang is one of the most ethnically diverse provinces in China with people from 13 different nationalities. Throughout its long history, Xinjiang was an important part of the famous Silk Road that connected Asia and Europe. Today, in the north of Xinjiang, Alashankou railway station (port) plays a very important role in connecting Europe and Asia through the so-called “European-Asian Land Bridge”.
Urumqi is the capital of Xinjiang. It holds the distinction of being the farthest city from salt water in the world. The climate is classified as continental arid. Urumqi is also a key juncture connecting the communication passage between the east and west. It is the political, economic and cultural center of Xinjiang.
ICEC Xinjiang Liaison Office was founded in Urumqi in 2002. Under the direction of the ICEC Beijing Office, it monitors and records customs clearance, railcar transload and rail logistics activities at the Alashankou border for ICEC's Kazakh sulphur importation business, serving in an advisory and liaison capacity as necessary. |
